Death Valley is most popular in autumn and winter months when the rest of the country is shivering under the icy chill of winter and a blanket of snow. Death Valley beckons ‘snow-birds’ from across the upper latitudes of north America with her dry desert climate and her persuasively mild temperatures.

Death Valley covers more than 3 million acres, roughly 1 1/2 times the size of Delaware.  It is also an area of extreme, albeit unusual scenic beauty and adventure.

Visitors flock to Death Valley throughout the year, but especially in the winter months, and recreational sports such as hiking, mountain biking and riding horseback are all popular activities inside the park. 

Death Valley provides habitat to more than 56 kinds of mammal, 36 variations of reptile, several sorts of amphibians and fish species, and more than 400 classifications of birds have been spotted within the park.

Some of the variations of mammals include bighorn sheep, foxes, coyotes, squirrels, rodents, jackrabbits, bats and more.  There can also be found a wide variety of reptiles within the borders of Death Valley  such as the Zebra-tailed lizard, a fast running, insectivorous inhabitant of the desert flats, washes and plains.  Or the desert horned lizard a moderately sized lizard with pointed scales that protrude from it’s head and body in the shape of horns.  Only the ‘horns’ on it’s head are rigid, the rest of the horn-like scales are soft and feel more like normal reptile skin.  One interesting thing about the horned lizard is it’s ability to shoot a stream of blood from the corner of it’s eyes when it is threatened by a predator.  This creates a distraction and allows the lizard an opportunity to escape.

Death Valley is also known for it’s many interesting ghost towns.   These colorful relics from Death Valley’s past were mostly mining towns that sprung up around the turn of the twenty-first century when gold, silver and copper ore was found in the area. One of the most interesting of these ghost towns is the town of Panamint City.  This little town was short lived, but made up for it’s short life through its audacious reputation.  Panamint City was founded by two outlaws who were hiding-out from the law.  During their hiatus in the Panamint Mountains, these two lucky outlaws discovered silver in Surprise Canyon and subsequently decided to give up their life of crime for a more domestic lifestyle.  During it’s time, Panamint City was considered one of the toughest, rawest, most hard-boiled little hell-hole that ever passed for a civilized town.  However the fast life of Panamint City led to an early demise, as the city went from the height of it’s boom in 1874 to utter destruction from a flash flood just two years later in 1876.

Lanzarote is the eastern most link in the Canary Island chain and has long been a popular destination with British and Irish tourists. And despite failing airlines, the falling pound and the current bleak economic outlook the Island of Fire is still a hot ticket. As holidaymaker numbers to the island have just kept on rising.

UK tourist continue to flock to the island and as a result demand for Lanzarote villas and apartments has remained relatively stable. Whilst property prices have also started to fall on the island it is less noticeable than in other european destinations.

This is most likely because to the fact that Lanzarote has much more to offer tourists than just sunshine alone though. As the island boasts a unique volcanic scenery, picturesque beaches, a host of natural attractions and some of the most unusual tourist sites found anywhere in the world. All of which is largely thanks to an island born artist and architect called Cesar Manrique.

Manrique´s other main initiative was to create a unique set of tourist attractions on the island that essentially fused art with nature.

In tandem with close collaborators such as Jesus Soto he lit an alternative path for island development with the creation of sites such as the Jameos del Agua, which embodied his desire to fuse art with nature.

• The london eye- A modern day version of Vienna’s Prater ferris wheel which stands opposite parliament and dominates the river skyline. Jump in a cab and get a breath-taking view of the city. Check the weather forecasts, as the gloomy days can sometimes spoil the landscape view your given when your up there, and when its hot the temperature in the capsule can be unbearable. Closed to repair work during the first few months of the year.

• Big Ben -What could be the UK’s most famous landmark. Unfortunately not open for the public to go and have a look, but if your near the house of parliament it may be worth getting close for a view. There are cells within the tower clock which are reserved for members of parliament, which havent been used since 1880 -given the Britains financial state, maybe we should look at bringing them back…..

• Buckingham palace- the official residence of Her majesty queen Elizabeth II, it became the official royal palace when Queen Victoria ascended to the throne. The palace is actually owned by the nation and not the royal family, so some of the rooms can be viewed by the public daily during the summer months. There is the palace’s state rooms which can be viewed in August and September and the changing of the guard to view in the forecourt of the palace.

• The tower of London -Sitting of the river Thames’s north bank, at one point the tower was prison, fortress and royal palace. Serving as a place of execution, armory, the royal mint and since 1303, the home of the crown jewels. Annoying the guards or the ravens insnt advised, as it still works pretty well as a prison.

• London zoo -The world’s oldest scientific zoo, was opened on April 27th, 1828 and was opened to the public in 1847, it houses 755 species of animals with 15,104 individuals, making it the largest collections in the United kingdom. A huge range of animals from the Mexican redknee tarantula to the tasmanian devils and the komodo dragons.

Walk in the West Village – many historical houses where artists and authors lived. The Upper West Side is a nice area to see and you can go into Central Park. If you are interested in art museums, the Metropolitan is the one to not be missed – it's one of the finest museums in the world. The Museum of Natural History is fascinating.

The East Village has lots of little shops/independant designer boutiques. Try Tokio 7 at 64 East 7th Street at First Avenue – it's a designer consignment shop. It can get very crowded, but you can find things here you won't see anywhere else. If you like Denim, look at Famous Friends at 616 East 9th Street (between Avenues B and C)

Walk through Soho – wonderful clothing stores. Have at least one meal in Chinatown – great for souvenir shopping.

Be sure to go into the Time Warner building – very expensive stores and restaurants. Even if you don't buy anything there, you can sit on a bench indoors and look out over Central Park.

You should take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry (it's free). You'll get a great view and photo op of The Statue of Liberty and a wonderful look at the Manhattan skyline. If the weather is pleasant, you can walk up to the Financial Center along the Promenade. Get an ice cream at Custard Beach – they feature different flavors every day – if you're lucky, they'll have Creme Brulee.

The kids are 5,9 and 12, and we'll be there for 3 days, mid week in April .
I'm from NY state, but the kids have never seen the tourist attractions, so we want to maximize our time with a good guidebook.

there were a couple of nyc guidebooks that were geared toward parents with kids, but those books are a few years old, and contain dated info.

so… i would recommend the EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE, from dk publishing. it's illustrated from cover to cover, and contains a wealth of information, graphics, and photos. what's neat about this book is there are tidbits of helpful information and secrets like how to hail a cab, and how to read the hack's license in case you have a problem, and have to report the driver. there info on how to read the signage on a city bus in case you need to get somewhere on a bus. all information is written in a friendly and helpful tone of voice. if you are pressed with time, the book contains a top ten list of things to do, and several suggested walks.
