Death Valley is not your typical American National Park. It’s a region of extremes… extreme temperatures… extreme geology… extreme history… extreme scenery. Death Valley National Park provides a stark contrast to many of Americas other national parks and caters to those who are looking for an escape from the ordinary, and a refuge from cold in winter.

Death Valley is most popular in autumn and winter months when the rest of the country is shivering under the icy chill of winter and a blanket of snow. Death Valley beckons ‘snow-birds’ from across the upper latitudes of north America with her dry desert climate and her persuasively mild temperatures.

Death Valley covers more than 3 million acres, roughly 1 1/2 times the size of Delaware. It is also an area of extreme, albeit unusual scenic beauty and adventure.

Visitors flock to Death Valley throughout the year, but especially in the winter months, and recreational sports such as hiking, mountain biking and riding horseback are all popular activities inside the park.

Death Valley provides habitat to more than 56 kinds of mammal, 36 variations of reptile, several sorts of amphibians and fish species, and more than 400 classifications of birds have been spotted within the park.

Some of the variations of mammals include bighorn sheep, foxes, coyotes, squirrels, rodents, jackrabbits, bats and more. There can also be found a wide variety of reptiles within the borders of Death Valley such as the Zebra-tailed lizard, a fast running, insectivorous inhabitant of the desert flats, washes and plains. Or the desert horned lizard a moderately sized lizard with pointed scales that protrude from it’s head and body in the shape of horns. Only the ‘horns’ on it’s head are rigid, the rest of the horn-like scales are soft and feel more like normal reptile skin. One interesting thing about the horned lizard is it’s ability to shoot a stream of blood from the corner of it’s eyes when it is threatened by a predator. This creates a distraction and allows the lizard an opportunity to escape.

Death Valley is also known for it’s many interesting ghost towns. These colorful relics from Death Valley’s past were mostly mining towns that sprung up around the turn of the twenty-first century when gold, silver and copper ore was found in the area. One of the most interesting of these ghost towns is the town of Panamint City. This little town was short lived, but made up for it’s short life through its audacious reputation. Panamint City was founded by two outlaws who were hiding-out from the law. During their hiatus in the Panamint Mountains, these two lucky outlaws discovered silver in Surprise Canyon and subsequently decided to give up their life of crime for a more domestic lifestyle. During it’s time, Panamint City was considered one of the toughest, rawest, most hard-boiled little hell-hole that ever passed for a civilized town. However the fast life of Panamint City led to an early demise, as the city went from the height of it’s boom in 1874 to utter destruction from a flash flood just two years later in 1876.

More information can be found about Death Valley National Park and it’s many tourist attractions, lodging options and activities by visiting NationalParkReservations.com/deathvalley.htm There you will find a complete listing of lodging options both inside the park as well as near the parks perimeter. You can also learn more about Death Valley’s many ghost towns and other tourist attractions at the National Park Reservations site.

Whilst the rest of Europe is still experiencing cooler spring weather the Canary Islands are preparing themselves for the busiest holiday season of the year. As these seven specks of Spain that lie just off the coast of Africa are Europe´s only genuine Winter sun destination.

Lanzarote is the eastern most link in the Canary Island chain and has long been a popular destination with British and Irish tourists. And despite failing airlines, the falling pound and the current bleak economic outlook the Island of Fire is still a hot ticket. As holidaymaker numbers to the island have just kept on rising.

UK tourist continue to flock to the island and as a result demand for Lanzarote villas and apartments has remained relatively stable. Whilst property prices have also started to fall on the island it is less noticeable than in other european destinations.

This is most likely because to the fact that Lanzarote has much more to offer tourists than just sunshine alone though. As the island boasts a unique volcanic scenery, picturesque beaches, a host of natural attractions and some of the most unusual tourist sites found anywhere in the world. All of which is largely thanks to an island born artist and architect called Cesar Manrique.

understandable of the damage that this could cause to his birthplace Manrique returned home to ensure that his beloved Lanzarote was not buried beneath a sea of five star concrete.

As a result of his efforts Lanzarote has largely been spared the type of over development now commonly found in other Spanish sun spots and other Canary Islands resorts. High rise buildings are banned, advertising hoardings are outlawed and all of the islands three main tourist resorts are well contained.

Manrique´s other main initiative was to create a unique set of tourist attractions on the island that essentially fused art with nature.

In tandem with close collaborators such as Jesus Soto he lit an alternative path for island development with the creation of sites such as the Jameos del Agua, which embodied his desire to fuse art with nature.

Down in london for the weekend on work and dont really want to spend all the time around the London conference venues? There’s much to see in London, heres a select list.

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

The london eye- A modern day version of Vienna’s Prater ferris wheel which stands opposite parliament and dominates the river skyline. Jump in a cab and get a breath-taking view of the city. Check the weather forecasts, as the gloomy days can sometimes spoil the landscape view your given when your up there, and when its hot the temperature in the capsule can be unbearable. Closed to repair work during the first few months of the year.

Big Ben -What could be the UK’s most famous landmark. Unfortunately not open for the public to go and have a look, but if your near the house of parliament it may be worth getting close for a view. There are cells within the tower clock which are reserved for members of parliament, which havent been used since 1880 -given the Britains financial state, maybe we should look at bringing them back…..

Buckingham palace- the official residence of Her majesty queen Elizabeth II, it became the official royal palace when Queen Victoria ascended to the throne. The palace is actually owned by the nation and not the royal family, so some of the rooms can be viewed by the public daily during the summer months. There is the palace’s state rooms which can be viewed in August and September and the changing of the guard to view in the forecourt of the palace.

The tower of London -Sitting of the river Thames’s north bank, at one point the tower was prison, fortress and royal palace. Serving as a place of execution, armory, the royal mint and since 1303, the home of the crown jewels. Annoying the guards or the ravens insnt advised, as it still works pretty well as a prison.

London zoo -The world’s oldest scientific zoo, was opened on April 27th, 1828 and was opened to the public in 1847, it houses 755 species of animals with 15,104 individuals, making it the largest collections in the United kingdom. A huge range of animals from the Mexican redknee tarantula to the tasmanian devils and the komodo dragons.

I think Hillery Clinton summarized Saddam's relationship with 9/11 best ..
In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons."
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002
As a sanctuary and an aid to al qaeda the threat of WMD including nuclear possibilities made him an important target for the well being of the US and the world. Afghanistan alone is not a threat , it did not have the capabilities of Iraq which is why both areas became targets..

A group of 2 couples — former co-workers, all retired now

We've never been to New York City

We all like Chinese, health foods and vegetarian food

My husband wants to know if there are any good all-you-can eat places — buffets, I guess that's what they are called

Interested in museums and libraries

Likes gadgets and electronics and music

I like to bum around thrift stores — are there good ones in NY City?

Are there places where you can purchase good ready made clothing at bargain prices?

What are things we must see and must do?

We are travelling together and will stay at the same hotel but plan to split up if necessary, since we are likely to have different interests

My favorite Chinatown restaurants are
Fuleen Seafood, 11 Division Street (lunch prices are great )- portions are big and the shrimp dishes – ummm

Sunrise 27, 27 Division Street, I especially love their fried squid, but all the fish dishes are wonderful

NY Noodletown, 28 1/2 Bowery, small, drab, crowded – the food here is awesome

Shanghai Cuisine, 89 Bayard Street – really good Shanghai food

On Canal Street between Church and Broadway, there are a lot of plastics, hardware and odd shops with very discounted "things" (tools, electronic parts, used computers) – my husband is fascinated by these stores – I am so bored.

There is an excellent Japanese all-you-can eat buffet called Todai on East 32nd Street near Madison- just look at the menu – they do custom-made sushi and stir-fries – you pick the ingredients

http://www.todai.com/

The main street of Koreatown is 32nd between 5th and 6th – lots of different restaurants – all price ranges – some have hibachi cooking, tasting menus, lots of vegetarian options (some are open all night)

The best Chinese buffet is in Flushing – the Queens Chinatown (get the #7 train at Times Square or Grand Central and go to Flushing, the last stop – pleasant ride – most of it outdoors). It's called East Buffet and they have a lot of unusual dishes – if you go, be sure to try the sharksfin seafood soup and the cold dessert soup with the melon balls.

http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/localguide/108587,0,2017812.venue

A restaurant with the real "flavor" of New York is Katz's Deli on Houston Street near Ludlow on the Lower East Side interesting area to walk through (note: we prounounce this Howz' ton not like the Texas city). There are two areas at Katz's – one is self-service and one is waiter service. Definitely sit in self-service – you go up to the counter, order your sandwich and, tip the counterman a dollar or two. He, then, will put much more meat in your sandwich than a waiter will bring you. (A few years ago several reporters went to Katz's with a small scale – some sat in waiter service and some sat in self service – all the self service sandwiches had at least a quarter of a pound more meat).
To add to the New York experience, drink a cream soda or celery tonic with your meal. Sandwiches are big enough to share – get an order of fries and you're all set. My favorite there is tongue and corned beef on a club roll. (Great for the carnivores)
Read about Katz's

Two excellent inexpensive Italian restaurants:

Near Union Square: Via Emilia on East 21st Street and Park Avenue. Appetizers are unusual and outstanding – gnocco fritto – large platter of Italian coldcuts served with delicious little fritters; tigelle (not served in too many places) hot biscuits with proscuitto and melted cheese; wonderful soups, good pastas, fish is always fresh. Some desserts are outstanding.

http://www.viaemilianyc.net/dinner.html….

In the West Village: Da Andrea on Hudson Street and West 11th Street.
Excellent pastas – I especially love their clam sauce, they, too, make tigelle, can get very crowded on weekends.

http://www.biassanot.com/

If you like Spanish food (from Spain, not Mexico – it's an entirely different cuisine), Costa del Sol on 50th Street and Ninth Avenue is wonderful – for $25, you get a complete dinner with a ton of choices – AND IT's GOOD! You get a choice of soup or salad – (I never order salad when there's another choice, so I can't comment). My favorite soup is the Caldo Gallego – from Galecia Spain – a delicious hearty soup with bacon, chorizo sausage, white beans, kale and other vegetables; you can also order the cold gazpacho or a chicken soup with noodles. You have a choice of more than twenty entrees – at least six different shrimp dishes – my favorites are the very lightly floured shrimp with wine sauce and the garlic shrimp – HUGE portions. You can also order salmon, paella, a whole lobster with butter sauce, various chicken dishes, mixed seafoods, veal., pork chops. These come with saffron rice and string beans – large platters on the table for everyone. You also get dessert and coffee – the cheesecake is good, but you can have flan or rice pudding or ice cream. As if all this food weren't enough of a bargain, if two of you order this three course dinner, you can get a bottle of red or white wine for only $6 more ($3 each)

http://members.aol.com/cdelsol/

If you get to Coney Island in Brooklyn (The New York Aquarium is wonderful) there is an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet on Neptune Avenue one block from Nathan's. There is also Totonno's one of the best pizza places in the City.

There are excellent thrift shops on East 23rd Street between Second and Third Avenue – the one I really like is the one that supports the New York City Opera – some very upscale clothing, accessories, kitchen wares, etc. They have a good book collection, especially cookbooks. There is also a Goodwill store on the block and a Housing Works (these are good shops) across the street. There are more thrift stores on Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue between 23rd and 28th.

Our best bargains for clothing:
Century 21

http://www.century21deptstores.com/…

Loehmann's

http://www.loehmanns.com/skipintrofinal….

Daffy's

http://www.daffys.com/index.cfm…

Filene's Basement

http://www.filenesbasement.com/master.ht…

Barney's

http://www.barneys.com/b/;jsessionid=dkj…

Museum of Natural History is great. Metropolitan Museum of Art is world class
My favorite (and, it's not popular, it's not even well known) is the Gubbio Studio. It's a fifteenth century library in a duke's palace. As you walk into this room, you see cabinets, closets, bookcases filled with books, musical instruments, scientific instruments, all made of little pieces of inlaid wood. You are not going to believe it when you get close – it's flat! This should take your breath away – I can't describe it. And the museum hardly advertises it. It's on the first floor, north of the medieval sculpture court.

http://www.metmuseum.org/works_of_art/vi…

Next favorite are the weapons and armor:

http://www.metmuseum.org/works_of_art/de…

Then, the costumes

http://www.metmuseum.org/works_of_art/de…

You can't possibly see this place in one visit. It's one of the greatest museums in the world.

The Cloisters – medieval – is uptown on a hill overlooking the Hudson River – great museum, gorgeous spot and they play Gregorian chants – you can ride all the way up on a bus and get to see different parts of the City.

Don't buy any electronics, cameras, computers, etc in the Times Square area – they sell a lot of defective goods – they know the tourists will not be repeat customer and they won't be back to complain. If you are buying anything, go to a store with a good reputation and a good return policy (B&H is excellent)

Bring the most comfortable shoes you own and have a great time!
