No stranger to performing, Lara has been seen in the role of Otilie in ‘Dvorak in America’ (Director David Galligan/ Choreographer Lee Martino). The Los Angeles Times says, ‘Lara Janine, a violinist and actor, is the standout as Dvorák’s life-hungry daughter’, Backstage West says of Lara’s performance, ‘Janine gives Otilie a refreshing touch of youthful gaucherie’, and KCLA Radio says regarding Lara’s star quality, ‘With her beautiful voice and innocence…will be a big star’ She also portrayed Jasmine in ‘Aladdin the Musical’ (Director Stefan Novinski/ Musical Director Todd Schroeder). Currently in Osaka, Japan finishing up a run playing Elphaba in ‘Wicked’, Lara says, ‘I am having a wonderful time in Japan and am excited about building a fan base here as well! I’ve already started performing music from this new CD and the reaction has been phenomenal ‘

She has been a Featured Artist along with Britney Spears and Destiny’s Child on Trollz.com and was nominated three years in a row by the Orange County Music Awards, including Best Alternative Artist and Best Female Artist.

Lara was awarded Top Female Vocalist in Pop & Overall by Garageband.com and her songs, ‘Just To Be Loved By You’, ‘Walking Away’, and ‘Let Me Put It To You This Way’ won Track of the Day, as well as, multiple Reviewer Awards on the Garageband website.

She was also awarded Top Female Vocalist by the California Thespian Festival.

Lara has been heard regularly singing the National Anthem for this year’s Stanley Cup Champions, The Anaheim Ducks! Her beautiful voice can also be heard as the voice of the singing Barbie doll ‘Princess Anneliese’ and her singing is featured on many Barbie commercials for Mattel. Her songs have been featured on programs such as Access Hollywood, Degrassi, and How Do I Look?

Julie Halston is one of the busiest actress/comediennes working today. Most recently, she played Tina Carmello on the CBS sitcom The Class. Well-known to theatre audiences, she was last seen on Broadway in Hairspray after receiving rave reviews (as well as receiving Drama Desk and Drama League nominations) for her performance in William Hamilton’s White Chocolate. She received an Outer Critics Circle nomination for her performance in The Roundabout’s production of Twentieth Century. Other Broadway credits include Gypsy, The Women and The Man Who Came to Dinner. Off-Broadway credits include acclaimed performances in The Vagina Monologues, The Butter and Egg Man and The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told.

She is a founding member of Charles Busch’s legendary theatre company, Theatre-in-Limbo and received a Drama Desk nomination for her performance in Mr. Busch’s play Red Scare on Sunset. She co-starred with Mr. Busch in many of his plays including Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, The Lady in Question and You Should be So Lucky.

Miss Halston’s one woman show, Julie Halston’s Lifetime of Comedy which was developed from her wildly successful club act, ran Off Broadway for six months and received an Outer Critics Circle Nomination for Best Comedy. CBS developed a pilot based on the play.

Her film credits include The Juror, Joe Gould’s Secret, Addams Family Values, Dottie Gets Spanked, Celebrity and David Searching. She can be seen in Charles Busch’s latest film A Very Serious Person which has been selected for the Tribeca Film Festival.

Television viewers may recognize her as Bitsy Von Muffling on Sex and The City.

In January of this year, Julie co-authored the well-received book of original monologues Monologues for Show-Offs published by Heinemann Press.

Our Lady of Pompeii Church

Father Antonio Demo (1870-1936) was born on April 23, 1870, at Lazzaretto di Bassano in the province of Vicenza, Italy. His study at the diocesan and Scalabrinian seminaries was twice interrupted by mandatory military service. Father Demo immigrated to Boston to do missionary work in 1896 and arrived in New York to serve as assistant pastor of Our Lady of Pompei a few years later. In 1900 he was appointed pastor of the church, whose magnificent Italianate building stands northwest of the park at the corner of Bleecker and Carmine Streets.

As pastor, Father Demo was respected for his excellent organizational skills: record-keeping, establishing church groups, working with local charities, and raising funds. Under his leadership, Pompei expanded its liturgical music programs, opened a day care center, and held its first bazaar. In addition to serving as a spiritual counselor to his parishioners, Father Demo was active in social services -translating documents and conversations, finding jobs, making loans, aiding in the immigration process, and writing personal recommendations. His spiritual care was exemplified by his hard work and generosity of spirit in response to the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire, which claimed the lives of 146 female employees on March 25, 1911.

In 1923 Father Demo learned that Sixth Avenue (now the Avenue of the Americas) was to be extended from West 3rd Street south to Canal Street to route traffic to the trans-Hudson River Holland Tunnel then under construction. Our Lady of Pompei’s building stood in the middle of the proposed street bed of Sixth Avenue. Father Demo organized the campaign to buy another property and to build a new church, rectory, and parochial school. Under the direction of general contractor and architect Matthew Del Gaudio, the cornerstone of the new building was laid on October 3, 1926, and the church was dedicated two years later, on October 7, 1928.

In 1935 Father Demo became Pompei’s pastor emeritus and superintendent of its parochial school. He died in 1936 in New York, and thousands of parishioners and friends, including Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, paid their respects to their beloved pastor. In 1941 the public plaza southeast of Our Lady of Pompei was improved by the Manhattan Borough President and named in memory of Father Demo by local law. Attended by numerous Greenwich Village, Italian, and parish groups, the dedication ceremony included the singing of the national anthem, speeches by city authorities, a parade to Washington Square Park, and a memorial Mass at Pompei.

Fifty years after the cornerstone of the church building was laid, parishioners arranged for an inscription to be engraved on the base of the central lightpole in Father Demo Square. The site is assigned to Transportation and maintained by Parks. As in traditional town plans in Italy, Father Demo Square is a piazza – an open space surrounded by buildings and a gathering place for its community.
