Katharine Hepburn Papers – Treasures of The New York Public

Before becoming a movie star, Katharine Hepburn was a powerful presence on the stage, and she continued to act and tour in plays throughout her life. The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center has acquired Ms. Hepburns personal collection of thousands of pages of notes, journals, photographs, cast lists, scripts, contracts, fan letters and other documentation relating to her important but perhaps lesser-known theatrical career. This collection of Katharine Hepburns personal papers is being made public for the first time.

The Librarys Music Division is one of the world’s preeminent music collections, documenting the art of music in all its diversity — opera, spirituals, ragtime, jazz, musical theater, film, world, orchestral, rock, and pop. The divisions vast collections illuminate an art form that is as diverse as humanity, but particularly noteworthy is the American Music Collection, whose holdings range from the first edition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” to Native American songs, to extensive manuscript collections of such major American composers as Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Henry Cowell, and John Cage.
